What is SASSA Disability Grant?
South African Social Security Agency provides monthly payments to millions of people with disabilities. Citizens who cannot work and are mentally or physically disabled are eligible to receive this monthly grant.
SASSA provides a grant for a disability that lasts more than 12 months. If your disability is only temporary, your grant will also be temporary.
This grant covers basic living costs, medical expenses and other necessities for individuals with disabilities. The applicant must first meet certain eligibility requirements and then undergo a medical evaluation to assess the severity of his or her disability.
This grant provides financial support to those with physical, intellectual, and sensory impairments.

How can I verify my SASSA Disability Benefit Status?
You will receive a letter from South Africa once your SASSA application has been approved.
If your application is rejected, you’ll also receive a letter from SASSA stating that you do not qualify for the grant.
Disability Grant 2020 Eligibility Criteria
You must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the SASSA Disability Grant:
- Must be South African or a permanent resident.
- The minimum age is 18 and the maximum is 59.
- If you’re single, your monthly income shouldn’t exceed R86280 or R172560 if married.
- It is necessary to be disabled in a way that prevents you from working and earning enough money.
- You should expect your disability to last at least six or more months.
- The government should not provide you with any additional social grants.
- If you’re single, your asset value should not exceed R1 227 606. Married couples are limited to R2 455200.
- A certified medical practitioner must certify your disability.

What documentation is required for SASSA Disability Grant Application?
You will also need the following documentation to apply for the SASSA Disability Grant:
- Valid South African identity documents (IDs) or unabridged birth certificates.
- Your proof of address can be a utility statement or a municipal letter.
- It is important to have medical proof or a certification from an accredited health professional, or doctor that confirms and documents your disability.
- Birth certificates or documents of identification are required for dependents.
- In order to be able to submit a claim on behalf an invalid individual you must have legal documentation. This may include court documents or powers of lawyer that show your authority.
- Documentation proving your assets and income, such as bank statements, payslips or other pertinent financial documents.
- You must provide proof for any additional grants or benefits.
SASSA disability grant application
The SASSA doesn’t offer an online application portal for Disability Grant. The application will therefore be made at SASSA.
- Find your closest South African Social Security Agency office. On our website, you can access the SASSA contact details or call their helpline.
- Request the Disability Grant Application form:On arrival at SASSA, ask for the Disability Grant application from reception or the designated officer. You will be provided with all the paperwork you need to apply for a grant.
- Complete the Application Form: Be sure to fill in the form completely and accurately with all the information you need about your disability and yourself. Please ask for help or guidance if you have questions. To ensure that your application is processed smoothly, it’s important to include all the required details and documentation.
- Always remain under the supervision of an SASSA Officer. It is common that a SASSA agent will be on hand to supervise and assist you while completing your application. Do not hesitate to ask for clarification or assistance if you need any questions about any part of the application form.
- Give the form to the officer: Once you have filled out the SASSA application form, give it to the SASSA agent for processing. The officer will check the details and make sure that any required documents are attached.
- Request a Receipt as Proof from the SASSA Officer: The SASSA officer, upon receipt of your completed application form will provide you with a proof as to whether you applied for Disability Grant. You may require this receipt for reference in the future or to inquire about your application’s status.
- Await Approval. Once you have submitted your application to SASSA, the officials will review it. It may take a while for your application to be approved.
What will the Disability Payment be in 2024?
SASSA recipients will receive R2 180 each month. The payment is designed to help people with severe disabilities live better lives.
